Mirjam Fried
Faculty of Arts, Charles University, Prague
Mirjam Fried teaches cognitive linguistics at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University (CU FA) in Prague, having previously taught at UC Berkeley, University of Oregon, and Princeton University. She’s been one of the leading proponents of the constructional approach, developing the analytic potential of Construction Grammar in areas beyond pure syntax. Her work includes language change as well as synchronic fluidity observed in spontaneously produced interaction, with emphasis on the contextual factors in linguistic categorization. Most recently, she has focused on conventional relationships between grammatical structure, discourse-functional features, and recurrent prosodic and segmental patterns in spontaneous dialogic communication. Her recent publications include papers such as Utterance Comprehension in Spontaneous Speech: Phonetic Reductions and Lexico-grammatical Context (in a volume on multimodal constructional approaches, 2025, with P. Machač), Intonation as a Cue to Epistemic Stance in One Type of Insubordinate Clauses (Folia Linguistica 2022, 56, with P. Machač) or Discourse-Referential Patterns as a Network of Grammatical Constructions (Special issue of Constructions and Frames, 2021, 13), as well as a number of edited volumes, including the Cambridge Handbook of Construction Grammar (CUP 2025, with K. Nikiforidou). She’s the co-founder of the book series Constructional Approches to Language (John Benjamins, 2000) and the journal Constructions and Frames (John Benjamins, 2009). Intermittently, she has served as Chair of the Linguistics Dept., and in 2014-2017 she served as Dean of CU FA. In 2018-2022, she was the PI of a five-year, multidisciplinary European structural project in Excellent Research (Creativity and adaptability as conditions for the success of Europe in an interrelated world, https://kreas.ff.cuni.cz/en/).
