Pozivamo sve zainteresirane nastavnike i studente na gostujuće predavanje mađarskoga lingvista prof. emer. Adama Nádasdyja pod naslovom

“My uncle, the war made him rich”: Dislocation, Extraposition and Topicalization

Predavanje će se održati na engleskom jeziku u srijedu, 16. listopada u 9:30 sati u dvorani I.

Dobro došli!

Sažetak predavanja:

Dislocation, Extraposition and Topicalization are types of Discontinuity phenomena in syntax, causing the “canonical” word order of a clause to be rearranged, often for pragmatic-communicative purposes like focussing. They are quite frequent in the languages of the world, but English, being a strictly configurational language, is largely reluctant to employ these movements. The lecture will look at how the three types appear in English, exploring their limitations and possibilities. Examples are: Dislocation: My uncle, the war made him rich; Extraposition: It appears that the road is blocked; Topicalization: This stuff I refuse to drink.

A sub-type of Topicalization is Wh-Fronting (Who did James interview?), radically different in Present English from Who interviewed James?, where nothing is fronted. A further type of discontinuity, Scrambling, does not exist in English, but is normal in German, Latin, Hungarian and other non-configurational languages. (German Kaufen werden wir das nicht.); learners of English often err by assuming that English can be scrambled (*When sent you the letter the bank?)
