Programme Requirements and Structure
Undergraduate double major programme in English language and literature
FROM ACADEMIC YEAR 2024-2025
DURING UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES, STUDENTS MUST ACQUIRE THE TOTAL OF 90 ECTS points as follows:
1. FROM THE PROGRAMME CORE OFFERED BY THE DEPARTMENT: 73 ECTS points. The core consists of required courses (51 ECTS), literary courses offered by the Department of English (20 ECTS), and the final exam (2 ECTS).
2. THE REMAINING ECTS POINTS ARE ACQUIRED AS FOLLOWS:
a) GENERAL SKILLS courses (the total of three courses) offered by the Department of English and/or Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences;
b) EXTERNAL ELECTIVE courses (the total of 12 ECTS) offered by the Department of English and /or Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and/or University of Zagreb (horizontal mobility)
Explanation:
Students have to fulfil all the requirements of required (mandatory) courses, including the final exam, as well as the requirements of elective literary courses. In each semester (from semester 3 to 6) students select one literary course, thus acquiring 20 ECTS credits (part of the programme core). Four literary courses are selected according to the following criteria: 1 course in Old English literature or one course in Victorian literature (or 19th-century Australian literature); 1 course in 20th-century British (or Australian/Canadian/Irish) literature or 20th-century American literature; 1 course in British (or Australian/Canadian/Irish) literature; 1 course in American literature. In order to enrol in any Year 2 and 3 literary course, students have to pass Introduction into the Study of English Literature. This makes up the core with the total of 73 ECTS points.
In semester 1 and 2, students can enroll in language competences courses (2 ECTS points per semester). In addition, in semester 2, students can enrol into Reading Literature, Media and Culture offered by the Department, or some other course included in the required generic skills module offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (minimum 3 ECTS points). In semester 3 students can enrol in Academic Skills offered by the Department, or any other course included in the required generic skills module offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (minimum 4 ECTS points).
During undergraduate studies, students can select courses based on their own preference (external elective courses), in the amount of 6 ECTS points offered by the Department of English (internal, i.e. departmental elective courses), or the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, or the University of Zagreb (horizontal mobility), in order to acquire the total of 90 ECTS points.
