{"id":33659,"date":"2018-09-27T16:09:05","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T15:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglist.ffzg.unizg.hr\/?p=33659"},"modified":"2018-09-27T16:18:04","modified_gmt":"2018-09-27T15:18:04","slug":"translation-and-intercultural-communication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anglist.ffzg.unizg.hr\/?p=33659&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Translation and Intercultural Communication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Course title: <\/strong>Translation and Intercultural Communication<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: small;\">Instructor:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0Dr. Snje\u017eana Veselica Majhut<br \/>\n<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: small;\">ECTS credits:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> 5<br \/>\n<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: small;\">Language:\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">English and Croatian<br \/>\n<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: small;\">Semester<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">: 1st and 3rd term of graduate studies<br \/>\n<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: small;\">Status: <\/strong>elective<strong style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: small;\">Form of instruction:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0two\u00a0 lectures and one seminar per week + e-learning<br \/>\n<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: small;\">Assessment: <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">continuous assessment components (50 per cent)\u00a0 and a term paper (50 per cent)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>OBJECTIVES: <\/strong>After finishing this course the students should \u00a0be able to: detect underlying \u00a0socio-cultural components of a text and deploy strategies for their most appropriate transposition; analyze the intercultural components of a text in the light of theoretical models and concepts; analyze and deploy various strategies in order to translate a text in a manner that respects cultural conventions; justify translation choices while maintaining a critical distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>COURSE DESCRIPTION:<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This course addresses the following themes: various concepts of culture and their relevance for translation; intercultural competence; applicability of functionalist approaches to translation; text types and genres; culture-specific features of text types and their implications for translation; analysis of concrete text types; the impact of the implied reader on the translator\u2019s decisions; coherence and cohesion of the source and target text.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>MODE OF INSTRUCTION:<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The course combines lectures and seminar work (2+1). The students are expected to read the literature before the lectures and participate in seminar discussions (both in class and in the virtual environment on http:\/\/omega.ffzg.hr\/ (Moodle). The students are also expected to apply the acquired knowledge in assessed written assignments (analysis of the selected aspects of source and targets texts, commentaries on the advantages and disadvantages of certain strategies in particular communicative situations, etc.) and a term paper.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Regular attendance, preparedness for class, active participation in class and in e-learning, regular submission of assessed assignments.
