{"id":19184,"date":"2012-09-12T13:38:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-12T12:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglist.ffzg.unizg.hr\/?p=19184"},"modified":"2012-09-12T13:38:00","modified_gmt":"2012-09-12T12:38:00","slug":"topics-in-american-studies-1-church-and-state-in-american-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anglist.ffzg.unizg.hr\/?p=19184&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Topics in American Studies 1: Church and State in American History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"line-height: normal; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Course title: <\/strong>Topics in American Studies 1: Church and State in American History<strong><br \/>Instructor: <\/strong>Prof. Douglas Ambrose<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\">(Fulbright Scholar)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>ECTS credits: <\/strong> 6<br \/><strong>Status<\/strong>: Elective<br \/><strong>Language: <\/strong>English<br \/><strong>Semester:<\/strong> 7<sup>th<\/sup> or 9<sup>th<\/sup><br \/><strong>Enrolment requirements:<\/strong> enrolment in the 7<sup>th<\/sup> and\/or 9<sup>th<\/sup> semester<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><br \/><\/span><strong>Course Purpose:<\/strong><br \/>This seminar examines the fascinating relations between religion and politics in colonial British North America and the United States from the colonial era through the nineteenth century.\u00a0 Beginning with the biblical, ancient, and medieval contexts of church\/state relations, we will devote the bulk of our time to an examination of the working out of those relations in the colonial, early national, and antebellum eras.\u00a0 We will then briefly consider some postbellum developments. \u00a0Throughout the course, we will focus on the ways in which American church\/state relations demonstrated both continuity with the larger Western history of such relations and a distinct \u201cAmerican\u201d situation and response.<br \/><strong>Format<\/strong>:<br \/>We will conduct the class primarily as a seminar.\u00a0 On Wednesdays, I will present a lecture that will provide the context for our Friday seminar discussions.\u00a0 The Wednesday lectures are not to be monologues; I encourage questions and discussion throughout my lecture.\u00a0 Seminar meetings depend on the active, informed, and collegial participation of the seminarians\u2014the students. <br \/>Showing up does not constitute participation; you must thoughtfully join the conversation. <br \/><strong>Course Readings:<\/strong><br \/>We will read a variety of primary and secondary materials.
