\nThe course describes the contemporary varieties of English, including the newly emerged standard Englishes and major substandard ones. It deals with the spreading of English outside Europe and covers topics such as prestige vs. stigmatized varieties, recent trends in spoken English, lexical variation in the Englishes of the world, English-based creoles, English as a second language, Internet English, and English as a Lingua Franca.<\/span><\/p>\n
