{"id":18995,"date":"2011-10-06T10:24:29","date_gmt":"2011-10-06T10:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anglist.ffzg.unizg.hr\/?p=18995"},"modified":"2011-10-06T10:24:29","modified_gmt":"2011-10-06T10:24:29","slug":"canadian-literature-and-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anglist.ffzg.unizg.hr\/?p=18995&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Literature and Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Course title: <\/strong>Canadian Literature and Culture<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Instructor<\/strong>: Dr. Vanja Poli\u0107<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>ECTS credits: <\/strong>6<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Status:<\/strong> elective<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Semester: <\/strong>one semester, 4<sup>th<\/sup> or 6<sup>th<\/sup><\/span> (2012\/13)<br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Enrolment requirements:\u00a0 <\/strong>completed <em>Introduction in English Literature<\/em><\/span>; <span style=\"font-size: small;\">enrolment in the 4<sup>th<\/sup> or 6<sup>th<\/sup> semester<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Course description:<\/strong> The course will consist of a close reading and analysis of selected (representative) Canadian texts and of placing them into the context of Canadian culture, history and present times.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Objectives:<\/strong> The objective of this course is to acquaint the students with selected works from Canadian literature, fiction as well as non-fiction (some of the most prominent literary critics are Canadian: McLuhan, Margaret Atwood, Northrop Frye, Brian McHale, Linda Hutcheon, Simon During), and to enable students to place Canadian literature into a broader context of literatures written in English language (in \u201cenglish\u201d languages).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Course requirements: <\/strong>The finalgrade is based on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">continuous assessment<\/span> which includes regular attendance, preparation for and participation in class, writing small assignments, timely submission of the final paper, and obligatory sitting for midterm and endterm exam. The paper is worth 35%, midterm and endterm exams are worth 50% and other elements of continuous assessment are worth 15% of the final grade. Students must fulfill <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all<\/span> elements of continuous assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Week by week schedule:<br \/><\/strong>1<sup>st<\/sup> week: introduction, general info on the seminar<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">2<sup>nd<\/sup> week: a short introduction into Canada\u2019s geography and the influence it exerted on Canadian history, culture and literature<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">3<sup>rd<\/sup> week: a short introduction into the Canadian history<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">4<sup>th<\/sup> week: multiculturalism and globalization: concepts that were coined in Canada. Also, a discussion about the diversity of Canadian society and the attempts to preserve it<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">5<sup>th<\/sup> week: introduction into literature: how Canadians perceive Can Lit: M. Atwood, <em>Survival<\/em> and N. Frye, <em>Bush Garden<\/em> and <em>Mythologizing Canada<\/em>.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">6<sup>th<\/sup> week: historical overview of literature, traveller accounts and literature of the first immigrants (e.g. S. Moodie, C. Parr Traill)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">7<sup>th<\/sup> week: overview of 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> century poetry (Confederation poets, as well as contemporary poets such as M. A. Klein, M. Atwood, L. Cohen, R. Kroetsch, et al.)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">8<sup>th<\/sup> week: multiculturalism, 2<sup>nd<\/sup> part on the example of a short story: R. Mistry, \u00abSwimming Lessons\u00bb. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">9<sup>th<\/sup> week: multiculturalism 3<sup>rd<\/sup> part: \u201cthe first settlers\u201d, Inuit and \u201cIndians\u201d: a documentary <em>Nunavuk<\/em> and discussion on the current position of the First Nations in the multicultural society of contemporary Canada<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">10<sup>th<\/sup> week: a selection from the first settlers\u2019 literature, e.g. E. P. Johnson, T. Highway, T. King et al.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">11<sup>th<\/sup> week: identity in Canada (M. Atwood, <em>Surfacing<\/em>, J. Kogawa, <em>Obasan<\/em>)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">12<sup>th<\/sup> week: identity in Canada: female identity: M. Laurence, A. Munro, M. Atwood, C.
