During the fourth semester, graduate students of English enrolled in the linguistics track are required to write a master’s thesis, for which they earn 15 ECTS credits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aim of the thesis<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe purpose of writing a master’s thesis is to show the following: that the student is able to use the relevant literature independently and critically, to present it systematically and clearly, and to employ conventional linguistic methodology and terminology.<\/span><\/p>\n

The thesis should focus on a linguistic problem (which may or may not be contrastive in nature) concerning the English language and must include some form of research.  In certain cases, with the permission of the student’s adviser, the master’s thesis can be an expanded version of a term paper previously submitted for a course.  It must be written in Standard English, according to accepted norms of research paper writing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSubmission of master’s thesis<\/strong>
\nThe student must submit a proposal for his or her master’s thesis by mid-February<\/strong> of the academic year when he or she will be writing it. The student must therefore consult with their thesis advisor during the previous semester, with whom he or she will choose a topic. In the current academic year, student must submit a thesis proposal in writing to the thesis advisor by the last week of February<\/strong>.

Submission of the master’s thesis<\/strong>
\nThe master’s thesis shall be submitted in electronic form.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oral defense<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe official procedure of the master’s thesis oral defense shall be determined at a later date by the Department of English.<\/span><\/p>\n

Formal requirements<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe Master’s Thesis shall have the following parts:<\/span>
\n\u00b7 title page<\/span>
\n\u00b7 table of contents<\/span>
\n\u00b7 main text of the thesis (introduction, elaboration of thesis, conclusion, abstract of 300-500 words,  
\n  and list of key words)<\/span>
\n\u00b7 appendices (if there are any)<\/span>
\n\u00b7 list of sources cited in the text<\/span><\/p>\n

Technical requirements:<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u00b7 The master’s thesis must be typed in a word-processing program, using only one font.<\/span>
\n\u00b7 Font size: 12<\/span>
\n\u00b7 Line spacing: 1.5<\/span>
\n\u00b7 The pages of the thesis must be numbered<\/span>
\n\u00b7 The thesis must be not be bound; rather, it should be fastened with a spiral<\/b> binding<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The title page of the master’s thesis should be written in English and should include the following:<\/span>
\n\u00b7 The name of the Faculty and of the Department, as well as the academic year in which it is
\n   defended.<\/span>
\n\u00b7 Name and surname of the student<\/span>
\n\u00b7 The title of the thesis<\/span>
\n\u00b7 The type of work (master’s thesis)<\/span>
\n\u00b7 The name and surname of the thesis advisor<\/span>
\n\u00b7 The year in which the thesis was written<\/span><\/p>\n

Length<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe recommended length of the main text of the thesis (not including appendices) is 15\u201325 pages.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

In accordance with the Regulations on studying at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Art. 61, Paragraph 15), for defenses in July, a complete final version of the thesis (that is, the one corrected according to the advisor’s instructions and formatted according to the instructions) must be sent to the advisor(s) no later than May 20 of that year. For defenses scheduled in September the complete versions of the theses must be sent to the advisor(s) no later than 45 working days before the scheduled date of the defense.<\/span><\/strong>
\nDuring summer break, advisors are not obliged to receive and read theses.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
