A short history of the library:
The English Department library was founded in 1935, immediately after the English language programme was introduced at the Faculty in 1934. After its humble beginning with 119 books (a donation of the British Council), the library gradually grew to its current size mostly owing to donations of the American Center and the British Council in Zagreb. In the early days the most important of these donations were the $2,000 received from the Rockefeller Foundation in 1954, with which the library grew to 3,000 volumes of books and periodicals. Through the mediation of Professor Josip Torbarina and the British Council, the library inherited 1,300 volumes of old and rare books in the area of English language and literature from the estate of the Oxford Economics Professor G. D. Cole. In the more recent years, the library expanded mostly as a result of donations from the USA Embassy in Zagreb, the European Society for the Study of English, the Sabre Foundation, the Irish Embassy, the Canadian Embassy, the Australian Embassy, numerous visiting professors sponsored by the Fulbright Foundation, and many individual donors.
