About the Department

The Department of English started its activities in 1934 as a specialized English language programme, which gradually developed into one of the twenty-three departments of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb. The Department is divided in four sections: English Language Section, English Literature Section, American Studies Program, and Teaching English as a Foreign Language Section. The Department offers the following undergraduate (Bachelor’s Degree) and graduate (Master’s Degree) programmes:

  • Undergraduate Programme in English Language and Literature (double major)
  • Graduate Programme in Linguistics (single and double major)
  • Graduate Programme in English Literature and Culture (single and double major)
  • Graduate Programme in American Literature and Culture (single and double major)
  • Graduate Programme in Translation (single and double major)
  • Graduate Programme in TEFL  (double major)

There are 29 faculty members instructing approximately 600 students on annual basis.

The Scandinavian Studies Section was founded in 1994 as part of the Department of English. The Section offers the following undergraduate (Bachelor’s Degree) and graduate (Master’s Degree) programmes:

  • Undergraduate programme in Swedish Language and Culture (double major)
  • Graduate Programme in Linguistics (double major)
  • Graduate Programme in Translation (double major)

There are seven faculty members instructing approximately 110 students on annual basis.
